Omanyte Card Art (WiP)

"Omanyte is one of the ancient and long-since-extinct Pokémon that have been regenerated from fossils by people. If attacked by an enemy, it withdraws itself inside its hard shell".

Thanks to Twitch plays Pokemon, where the Helix Fossil is becoming somewhat of a meme, I thought it was time to draw myself some Omanyte! Omanyte is my little-cup bro, perhaps the most kawaii first gen Pokémon, and definitely the most kawaii fossil pokemon, Shame he evolves into such an ugly beast.

The inspiration to this piece should be obivious to those who know their cards, Kenkichi Toyama's awesome depiction of Omanyte in EX Legend Makers, many people favourite piece of card art, one of the rare cases of a pokemon showing an emotion other than joy or anger.

I love Toyama's use of simplistic shapes and shading, the fact the main Omanyte is over-shadowed by the other two, drawn almost out of focus. This is currently unfinished, I've been feeling sorry Omanyte all these years, so felt it was time he found a friend, which he will appear with soon, so check back soon!
